Book Review: The Meaning and Mode of Baptism by Jay E. Adams [Reformed Presbyterian]

Author: Jay E. Adams
Which Christianity/Denomination?: Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church (ARP)

Book: The Meaning and Mode of Baptism
Quick Summary: Short 56 page booklet. Paedobaptist argument using analysis of scripture verses to demonstrate 1) all baptisms in the Bible were pouring/sprinkling and 2) water baptism symbolizes the Holy Spirit's anointing the believer by pouring rather than immersion symbolizing the death and rebirth of a believer.

Pros:
Amazing insight into aspects of baptism that most Christians have probably never considered.

Cons:
Claims are not always biblically accurate:

  • Claim: All verses in the Bible that mention "baptism" refer to pouring/sprinkling.
  • Concern: There are several passages in the Bible that clearly describe Baptism as immersion.

Claims are not always clearly explained:

  • Claim: John the Baptist baptized Jesus by pouring.
  • Concern: Adams does not address Jesus "coming up out of the water".

Conclusion:
Read it. It is likely you have not heard these arguments before and they will certainly shed new light on the subject and get your to consider additional aspects that you may not have considered previously.
